EW for Life cycles and runs to raise €33,718

Giving every cancer patient a personalised treatment plan, and no longer exposing them to the possibly unnecessary side effects of a generic treatment. That’s the aim of the Center for Personalized Cancer Treatment. To raise money for further research, the 5th annual Stelvio for Life event was held in Bormio, Italy on Saturday 27 August. Team EW for Life again took part in this sporting event this year, and raised a grand total of €33,718.

Team EW for Life
Filled with apprehension, the team members of EW for Life stood on the starting line. The formidable Stelvio Pass: 21.2 kilometres long, 34 bends, an average gradient of 7.1% and a climb of 1,533 metres. This wouldn’t be a stroll in the park. It would be a gruelling struggle both physically and emotionally, with much sweat and tears shed along the way, but that’s nothing compared to the battle facing people with cancer. But helping to make their treatment as bearable as possible was the team member’s motivation to go to the limit. Bas Cornelissen, managing director of EW Facility Services: “The whole team had a tough time of it, but if this brings us just one step closer to reaching the goal of the CPCT it’s more than worth it.”

Main sponsor
EW Facility Services believes that corporate social responsibility must be very clearly focused on investments that help society as a whole make progress. Driven by that vision, the organisation has been an ambassador for the Barcode For Life charity, the organisation behind Stelvio for Life, since 2012. The organisation is also the main sponsor of the event itself. Bas Cornelissen: “We’re inspired by their distinctive view of cancer treatment, attaining goals in the face of setbacks and putting forward innovative solutions for complex challenges: issues that the CPCT team faces every day. So we’re very happy to link up with this organisation.”

Half million
The participants together raised a total of €505,040, 100% of which goes to the charity. Prof. Emile Voest, chairman of the CPCT, was handed the cheque after the event in Italy. “Thanks to the CPCT’s unique approach we can very quickly translate new discoveries from DNA research into a better treatment for cancer. We’re making great strides, and it’s a wonderful prospect that the next generation can benefit from this”, said Emile Voest in his speech to the attendant participants and supporters. He complimented Stelvio for Life as unique for its manner of fundraising, with 100% going to the charity, and also because of the arduous sporting challenge in breathtaking surroundings. In doing so he drew parallels between Stelvio for Life and the CPCT, which belongs to the top echelon of personalised cancer treatment worldwide.
